Open space issue in Twin Lakes

Federal Way letters 1/29, 3:53 PM

by Arthur Hopkins, Twin Lakes

Twin Lakes was developed in the 1960 as a golf course community. The golf course is still an important part of the development, even though most of the people who live in Twin Lakes aren’t members of the club. It provides us open space and pleasant views, and the continuation of this open space is important to the community.

The golf club seems to need more money to continue to operate, and for maintaining the golf course as open space. The Twin Lakes HOA board has chosen to pursue one option for preserving this open space. The way they’ve chosen and pursued this option is regrettable. Other options might have been considered, and they might have been considered in a more open and inclusive way. That wasn’t done.

However, the preservation of the open space is important. If the vote on Feb. 6 goes in favor of the proposal of the board, I hope they will strengthen the position of the HOA in the agreement with the club. In effect, we will be investing in the club without any effective control over the club’s operation, and with little hope of recovering that investment if the club subsequently fails. If the vote goes against the proposal, I hope the board will involve the whole community in new efforts to preserve the open space.
